More Information

Research Overview

Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, joined through an atypical bond between glutamate and cysteine. Its reactive cysteine thiol allows it to donate electrons to reactive oxygen species in a reaction catalysed by glutathione peroxidase, generating oxidised glutathione (GSSG), which is then recycled back to the reduced form by glutathione reductase using NADPH. In laboratory research, the ratio of reduced to oxidised glutathione is widely used as a marker of cellular redox state, while GSH itself also serves as a cofactor for glutathione S-transferases and as a mediator of reversible protein S-glutathionylation in redox signalling. No therapeutic or clinical claims are made or implied.

Primary Research Areas

  • Oxidative stress & redox balance: used in cell-based assays where the ratio of reduced to oxidised glutathione is tracked as a marker of redox status under induced oxidative challenge.
  • Detoxification & phase II conjugation: studied as the key endogenous nucleophile that glutathione S-transferases use to conjugate electrophilic compounds during phase II metabolism research.
  • Enzyme kinetics assays: applied as a substrate in in-vitro assays measuring the activity of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase.
  • Redox signalling & S-glutathionylation: investigated for its involvement in reversible cysteine modification on proteins, a mechanism linked to cellular signal transduction.
  • Mitochondrial redox biology: used in models comparing cytosolic and mitochondrial glutathione pools and their relationship to cellular energy metabolism.

This peptide needs a mildly acidic solvent

This peptide has limited solubility in neutral water. Laboratory practice recommends reconstitution with a mildly acidic solvent — 0.6% acetic acid — which supports complete dissolution and helps protect oxidation-sensitive residues.

Bacteriostatic water is not the recommended solvent here: the powder may stay cloudy or only partially dissolved.
You can add the acetic acid solution to your order below, together with your peptide product.
